When I was first learning to weave, I wove a sampler scarf using many different patterns, yarns, and colors that my teacher had given me to experiment with and learn from. It was a great feeling when two weeks after beginning (this same piece would now take me a few hours) I was ready to cut the finished piece off the loom.
As it happened, a friend was walking through the room and saw the scarf draped over my loom - it was my first commercial display. She fell in love with it and said she wanted to buy it.
Wow, was I excited! The only problem was I had no idea what to charge. After all, she was a friend and I was only a beginner. Meekly, I said “How about $20.” She said okay and that was my first sale. If I had known to check stores and craft fairs, I would have learned that scarves like mine were selling for $60 and up. Today, I would price the same scarf at $120 and get it easily.
That spur of the moment pricing decision wasn’t based on value. I didn’t stop to figure how many hours I had worked or the cost of the materials or what shoppers were accustomed to paying. And perhaps like you, I didn't know how to value my work and price appropriately.
Another lesson about a year later gave me an even bigger "Aha" moment. Shawls that I had been trying to sell for $75 just wouldn't move. So I improved the hang tags, accented the fine materials and upped the price to $110. Suddenly people started buying them.
Along my journey as a craft business owner, I've learned about pricing crafts as a real business owner and not just a hobbyist. This last year I "graduated" to opening a fine crafts gallery in Madrid, New Mexico.
What I have discovered about pricing crafts from my own experiences and other professional craft artists could fill a book. Well, in fact, it has.
